I will be moving to Chapel Hill/Carrboro in early spring 2017. I plan to rent a 2/2 house or townhouse. I realize there are numerous websites that list rentals (Zillow, Trulia, ChapelHillRent, etc), and was wondering if it's necessary or more advantageous to work with a real estate agent. And, if so, what's the best way to find a good real estate agent? Many thanks for any advice.

No - in fact most established agents probably wouldn't work with rentals. If you're looking for location/neighborhood advice, post your questions here, lots of knowledgeable people including some real estate agents who will likely be happy to help out.

Craigslist, Zillow, MLS, etc for rentals.

We just rented a home in Raleigh. We had used a real estate, but when we started wife was only considering purchase and I was considering rental only. we eventually decided on rental, but real estate agent demeanor went south very quickly...

Thanks for the advice, m378 and Imbebo. I kind of thought that the minute I mentioned rental, an agent would tune me out...

You should at least be able to get one to set up a search for rentals for you.
