Me too! Do you like the Volt? (BTW, I always think those names should be reversed and Volt should be the all electric.) The Bolt could be in our future. I love our Leaf, though. We bought it used from a mom-n-pop dealer in Durham who had gotten a fleet coming off lease I think. Got a great price. It's a 2013. Still doing great, just have to rotate the tires every now and again and put washer fluid in it and that's about it.
IIRC the Leaf is the fastest depreciating car on the market. Great car to buy used!
Hopefully battery production costs come waaaay down in the future.
Yeah, I don't know that I would have done it new, but making the leap to electric with a used vehicle was great. Pretty sure these were all fleet vehicles coming up from Georgia. $13k with 8000 miles on it. It's got 30,000 miles now and is super fun and easy to drive. No maintenance, no gas, minor impact on our electric bill (much cheaper than a month's worth of gas).

Give an electric a drive if you haven't already and you're in the market. There definitely are great deals to be had buying used. If you wait until the 2017s come out you'll probably be able to find a super deal since that will be a big bump in battery range. FWIW, we average about 85 miles on a charge in our Leaf, which is better than the plug-in hybrids like the Volt, but those have gas engines for back up. Most new EVs will have a 200 mile range starting with the 2017/2018 model years. Tesla is already at 300 I believe.

A new Leaf battery is ~$6,000 with install and trade-in factored in.
You can expect at best 8 years on it until you get serious degradation in performance.
$6,000/8 years = $750/yr in 'gas'. That's $62/month or the current equivalent of about 12,000 miles a year in gas. Best case.
I'm sure it's a cool car. I really do. My Volvo has 190,000 on its original engine and gets its oil changed once a year.
Until electrics can approach the economics of an ICE, they are a novelty and nothing much more IMO.
So, word around the campfire is the Selma distribution depot shut down today. Basically, the fuel stock is gone and only fuel left is what is in stock at gas stations so once they run out you're on your own. Unfortunately, pricks like myself have prepared by topping off all four of my vehicles, 4 6g cans of 93, 2 6g cans of Diesel, 5g in my mower, and 22g in my boat. Am I planning on mowing a lot of grass or boating? No. I have a siphon in case this shortage continues. A week from now if the pipeline hasn't been repaired there will be no gas. If the shortage doesn't last, so what? I have stabilizer so the fuel is good for a year.
Sorry, Bo. I don't play fair.

Nah, they're a non-polluting means of getting around this country. Definitely not a novelty and definitely the way it will be in the future. I'm no gear-head, but they are really good cars. The Tesla is wicked fast and even the little Leafy is super quick off the block — not that I drive that way.

The Sheetz on Broad St/55 and Old Powell Rd in Fuquay is out.
Rumor has it that they won't be resupplied until at least Thursday.
