I am looking for some wood for a table top in which I can either stain or paint. It has to be 9ft long by 28 inch wide. Any suggestions of what kind of wood this should be or where to buy? It is going to be a desk in a home office.

Thanks!

"9ft long by 28 inch" at Lowe's? I can see either 9+ feet long or 28-inches or wider, but not both, but I could be mistaken.

I would think for something like that you may need to go to Capital City Lumber or similar.

this will need to be a nicely prepped slab. or a composite with veneer.
Solid wood, even glued-up, will be pricey, and don is right. I would venture into Capital City Lumber for starters.

I would think Oak, Cherry, or Maple would be good for a desk/table top. Hard hardwood.

"I am looking for some wood for a table top in which I can either stain or paint"...are you willing to do the prep work... sanding ?

These guys can cut you something from their inventory of cedar, oak, pine...https://www.facebook.com/Garretts-Cu...66605500157947, Bullock NC.

Klingsplor's Woodworking Shop in Raleigh might be a good source. They are the only place I've found for certain veneers and specialty woods. Call them or stop by since the web site doesn't show every thing. They are very helpful and really listen to determine the best solution for your needs.

Check out WoodQuarters. We've bought several unfinished solid wood items from them over the years and have always been pleased. Not too expensive and great quality.
