The Party Barn: Are Rustic Weddings Destroying a Way of Life in Rural Orange County? | News Feature | Indy Week

A good article giving discussion and analysis to ongoing drama of a wedding venue and event center masked as a rural farm and possibly flouting agri-tourism laws.

Thanks for posting this it was an interesting read. It highlights the need to stay on top of property rights (and legal zoning loopholes) to keep oneself educated. That is a message I keep telling people here in western wake who buy the house in the subdivision right next to the undeveloped land. "You need to expect that one day it will be developed and be educated as to what could be built there."

It may not be popular, but I support the Brewer's legal right to develop their land.

i mean that's kind of the point of the article they are masquerading a wedding hall as a farm and the area isn't zoned as such.

Barn weddings are going to be out of fashion in a few years, like every other "of the moment" wedding idea - so I hope these people aren't importing an eventual useless eyesore.

They legally acquired a USDA number which gave them a "get out of jail free" card when their neighbors complained about he purpose of the property. One could argue whether it should have been granted, but it was. And it has since caused the agency that grants them to tighten up the process.

This is really interesting and raises many issues worth considering. That said, I work at a high end jewelry store which does a fair amount of bridal work. Talking with 40 and under clients I can see where this sort of venue would be a gold mine. But my sympathy is with those impacted by the proposed venue. I'm all for finding ways for farmers to be able to maximize their property to stay viable. But this situation (and I did a bit more research) seems to be using the "farm" designation as a way to simply build a party destination with a slim nod towards actual agriculture.
