Can someone tell me WHY 540 gets so backed-up/heavy right before 70 and at least through the Leeseville exit and sometimes beyond on the commute home? And is it always like that?
You loose a lane at US-70, down from 4 starting at Aviation Parkway to 3 once you pass US-70. Lane compression almost always leads to a backup. You also have the RTP traffic that used Alexandar to US-70 that merge onto I-540 at this junction, and at rush hour that can be a lot of cars. Combine the two and you have a recipe for congestion.
And.... From Lumley Rd. to Leesville is a slight up-hill. People generally don't pay enough attention to their driving to give-it-a-little-more-gas to maintain their speed.
To answer your question, jerseygirl, yes, I540 is heavily congested at certain times of the day. I don't stay on I540 as far as RTP, but get on/off at Aviation Parkway, and because I am retired, I can pick-and-choose generally, times I get on I540.
I love the convenience, but do understand your frustration. Would your workplace conceivably entertain letting you arrive at/leave work at a different time to avoid the congestion? Even 30 minutes might make a difference for you.
Only during rush hour. One thing I notice is some people stay in the outermost passing lanes until they almost get to the Leesville exit and then put their blinkers on and cut over 3 lanes of traffic to get off at Leesville. UGHHHH!

It's not that big of a deal. I've made this drive several times during rush hour and it might cost you a few extra minutes, but it's not that huge of a deal. My concern is what will this area look like in 5,10,15,20 years, etc? OH and BTW I can't stand rubber neckers! I was driving on 40 east just past Gorman today and there was an accident on the other side of the road, so of course traffic going east was backed up for miles because people needed to slow down and look. I refuse to look just on principle...so when we're getting up to the accident scene what does the guy in front of me do? He litterally comes to a stop and turns around in his seat for several seconds to look at whats going on. He stops! unbelieveable. ok, sorry for being slightly off topic
