My sister wants to buy a house in Raleigh, but it seems that it's hard to find a house in Raleigh around 200k or lower. Preferably a 3 bedroom. What are other areas in Raleigh that we can look into? Some people recommend Knightdale right on 540 but I am not too familiar with that area and the safety there. We're mostly familiar with north Raleigh and everything here is at least $280k+ any recommendations would be appreciated. Mostly looking for safety, but at the same time not too isolated from the rest of the triangle.
I've been looking for the same thing, possibly as a investment property. You can find close to 200K in some of the older Cary and Apex neighborhoods. 3BR ranch, probably not updated. On the plus side, the property might be a half acre or so.
Townhouses are not really a preference but we're not eliminating the idea. I mostly prefer them because they're easier to lease or sell in case something comes up. I do like houses like Saucy mentioned that may have half an acre to do what we please, but this is her first house and don't really want a fixer upper.
I've seen a lot of deals while window shopping but I am not too sure about the neighborhoods. Especially for places like Cary or Knightdale.

Those are too very, very, different towns. Practically polar opposites honestly. Money will go much further in Knightdale than Cary but there's a good reason for that.
Sub 200k for a single family home in a "nice" area of Raleigh/Western Wake county is pretty much limiting you to fixer-uppers. Townhomes open up the possibility of getting something that won't need much work.
Come to Garner! Lived here now 25 years. You pay considerably less in real estate but get ALL the amenities of Raleigh. It is 8 minutes form my 3 br house in Garner to a parking deck in downtown. You simply can not go wrong with Garner.
A townhouse in a more desired area vs. a house in a less desired area might be a better idea if she's looking to gain some equity and move up in the future.
Depends what you define as decent. If you're willing to go up to $250K, you can find a small 2 bedroom house near Mordecai/Oakwood or somewhere east of downtown that will be a great investment as downtown Raleigh continues to develop.
There are townhouses in the <$200K price point in Brier Creek. Less than five years old.
