Wow.....just wow. And why does this not surprise me this is happening in Durham?

The SPCA does free adoption events also. I don't agree with it 100% but it's still better than the alternative for a lot of animals.

Having lived in "the hood" I assure you most of those pets who get adopted by low-income folks at these freebies are not better off.

Their website CRASHED the night they announced this because it ran out of bandwidth from so many visitors. I had been keeping tabs on what their selection of dogs/pups has been for the past couple weeks because I'm looking to get one and because my old roommates got their dog from there as a pup and she is great! As of last night, 1 day into the $0 adoption fee....they only had 1 dog left, a 5 year old male chihuahua (poor dude!).

APS of Durham is a step above the traditional animal shelter like Wake County Animal shelter in that they know much more information about the pets and they provide all vaccinations in addition to the spay/nueter....but they are not quite as difficult to adopt from as the SPCA...which has a 10-day waiting period for most of their dogs.

I'd call the donation that resulted in almost all of the dogs from APS of Durham getting adopted a success. Not sure why OP seems so appalled or what he is trying to insinuate with the "of course this happened in Durham" mantra though.

Touche. But some of these dogs will get good homes, which is better than all of them being euthanized I guess?

I really would love to see figures showing how many of the dogs adopted out in "free adoption" events wind up back in a shelter within 12 months.

The Wake County Animal Center (not shelter) is a county organization - eg the County Pound. I think the full time staff are county employees, but they do have a great bunch of volunteers that help out.

There is not a 10-day waiting period for the SPCA of Wake County. You can adopt the same day (unless you are there near closing time). Note that they are not affiliated with the ASPCA or other SPCA organizations, which may have different criteria for adoptions.

I've been three times to SPCA of Wake County. You have to fill out an application, leave, see if you were the one who they choose, then they set up a home visit, three reference checks, and then there is a waiting period. They told us point blank the whole process can take up to 10 days for young dogs and puppies. It is less strict for cats and some of their senior-aged dogs.

I understand why they are so thorough...I just don't want to have to go through that whole process personally.

I was at the shelter off New Bern/64 east yesterday morning....all of their signage says "Wake County Animal Shelter". Either way, semantics aside......I'm not saying it isn't a noble organization; just wasn't what I was looking for.

We never had a home visit w/ SPCA. We went, picked up the application, brough it back, talked to the "adoption specialist" or whatever, were told we could adopt that day. This was 6 months ago or so.
