12 minutes. I live and work in North Raleigh. It's a 4 mile commute.
I think I am better off than most.
It entirely depends upon where you live and work, because the commutes in this region do not follow your standard pattern of towards the city in the AM and out to the suburbs in the PM. There are several employment destinations... Raleigh, Durham, Research Triangle and others. You could choose to live in a location where the rush hour traffic runs in the opposite direction during your commute.
Live in Brier Creek, work in Morrisville. It's about 6 miles. In the morning it take 15-20 minutes. Aviation Pkwy is a mess, and already completely overwhelmed. The syncing of the stoplights is probably the biggest problem right now. Them building a large new apartment complex at Evans/Aviation is a huge mistake until this road is widened, which will never happen due to the lake crossing.
I can make it home in the afternoons in under 10 minutes.
I live in Cary near Cary Pkwy and Old Apex Rd, and work in Durham at ATC. It is typically a 30 min. commute, but I tend to drive at the cusp of rush hour -- leaving home at 7 am and leaving work at 3:45 pm, or leaving home at 9 am and leaving work at 6 pm.
Driving during rush hour doesn't usually add much time to my commute unless there is an accident or delay on 147 in Durham. I am more likely to miss that when traveling at the times that I do, since less cars are on the road.
25 minutes, from Cary/Morrisville (McCrimmon Pkwy) to Chapel Hill. I usually come and go outside of rush hour, but the few times I came home during, it got longer by maybe 5 minutes and 10 at the most.
Same for my wife who commutes to near TTC. Each way she gets to observe the line of stopped cars on the other side of 540.
About 5 minutes, if traffic is heavy. I live and work in Cary. Potholes don't last long around here. That's one thing I've got to say for the town ... they don't let potholes last long without filling them. During the winter, they might be there for a few weeks until the temps get high enough that they can patch. But otherwise, they address them quickly.
I live in North Raleigh (north of 540 and just west of Creedmoor Road) and drive to RTP every day (about 12 miles). The drive in is 20 minutes before 8:00 AM, 25 minutes afterward and the drive home is usually about 20-25 minutes if I leave closer to 6:00 PM (I never leave during the PM rush hour, or if I do I go back roads which takes 30 minutes).
While traffic has grown heavier since we moved here in 2007, it is more than a decade or two away from approaching anything I knew growing up in and around NYC.

I did that same commute for a year and a half - but I did it mid rush hour. It usually took 30-45 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes to 1.25 hours in the evening (leaving at 5pm). I was glad to get out of that job and that commute!
Now I'm 9 miles from where I work in RTP - takes maybe 15 minutes. I try to leave before 4 though to avoid the slowdowns on Davis. I have a lot of flexibility in my hours and can work from home as well.
Commutes here will vary widely depending on time of day. Limited roads and few alternate routes mean a lot of people sharing the same route.
