Hi.
I am looking for some help. my fAmily and I are moving to the Raleigh area. I am moving for work as my company is expanding. I have heard great things about Clayton and Wake Forest but I am having trouble finding comparisons of the two. My son will go to a private Christian school so I'm not overly worried about the neighborhood-school zones. We do not have a bunch of new construction here and most of our homes are historically done and older. I'm nervous about making the right decision. Any feedback would be helpful. My husband and I are 33 and care more about areas that are family oriented.
Pretty much every sub-division in the Triangle is family-friendly. Most have community swimming pools and club houses which tend to attract families with children.
Not knowing where the job is located makes it difficult to provide advice. I love Wake Forest but it can seem remote relative to many other areas in the Triangle, though it is closer to the heart of things than Clayton. Clayton can seem even more remote and if someone in your house needs to drive into Raleigh or RTP during normal business hours, I-40 is about as bad as it gets with traffic down here.
May I ask why you've locked in on Clayton or Wake Forest?
After looking at housing the price points for both of the areas seem to have what I need. I need a big fenced in yard for my dogs and son and I need a 4 bedroom house between $250-$300k. Lot size and not having my neighbors on top of me is important as that is not an option from where I am living. Since I will work from home I'm not totally worried about commuting but my husband is looking for jobs in the triangle. Since we have to find a home before he may find the dream job it's more about the right house in the right neighborhood and with a community that is not in a downtown setting. We like canoeing, we go camping, and like to ride bikes and take the dogs swimming in lakes.
Choose your child's school and go from there. I don't see how you can be asking about Wake Forest and Clayton without saying where his school is. Are you aware that there is no bus transportation for private schools here? If you send your kid to Cary Christian you're going to be sorry with either Wake Forest OR Clayton (just an example). Also, bigger yards are usually synonymous with older construction here so don't rule out an "older home" (won't be old to you coming from upstate - it will more like 20-30 years old).
As NYC2RDU said most of the Triangle is family friendly suburbia.
We have no transportation to private schools here either. There are 2 outside of Clayton that we going to visit next month. I am actually prefer a home that is not new construction. That is crazy that they are carrying Salens. I usually have to bring them with me on any visit to family that left Buffalo.
It's way more affordable to live in Clayton than Wake Forest, but remember.... you get what you pay for. Wake Forest is mostly made up of new transplants. You will find tons of people from the area from NY in WF. North Raleigh Christain academy is a short 15 min drive. We drove out to Clayton once to check it out and it felt out in the middle of no where with not a lot of restaurants and things to do, however the prices were great. Wake Forest seems closer in to everything, nicer, newer, and has a ton of stuff to do. I feel like with the Seminary right here in Wake Forest, there are a lot of religious offerings too.

Neither Clayton nor Wake Forest are centrally located. Both are pretty much on the outer fringes of the Triangle region. If your husband were to find a job anywhere near the center of population for the region; he'd have a pretty miserable commute. Just something to consider. I'm sure you noticed that houses are significantly larger for less money out there....but there's a reason for that.
Check out Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Raleigh 27603 area code or Garner. Wake Christian isn't that far away from those towns.
