What time are you going?

My personal opinion is, if it's not during rush hour, take 40. You are going to have to do it sooner or later, so why not just get that under your belt? If it's during rush hour then yeah, go the alternate route that will be less stressful.

Just remember the fundamentals and you will be fine.

If it helps you can also remind your mother that statistically Urban Interstates like Route 40 are roughly twice as safe* as urban arterials like Route 70 and about three times as safe as other urban streets. Route 40 is actually the safer way for you to go.
