I am a new transplant to Durham and am struggling with the decision of whether to purchase a new home for the first time in my life or go with an older home, which generally has more acreage with it, a plus for me with a preschool child. I like the new homes I've seen in the 300-400 range but they generally have such small or yards steeply sloped toward a drainage stream. Are there any new homes in my price range with decent yards 1/2 acre plus? We're here because of Duke so it needs to be fairly close to the university. Any info appreciated.

what about trinity park or hillendale area? I used to work at the nc school of science and math and loved the homes on carolina ave, etc. You should check it out, most are in walking distance to ninth street side of duke.

An older home with some updates in it would be a good choice. To stay near Duke you will have way more options if you look at older homes.
