We have been considering a move from Dallas to Raleigh for the past few months. We posted here asking some questions a while back about Raleigh and got some really great insight from y’all here in the forum. A giant thank you for that. We did a scouting trip last week and gained a lot of clarity about the potential move. I felt like there was not as much of a northeast vibe as we anticipated...
-Where are most of your neighbors from? A number of people told us that NY/NJ relocatees make up the bulk of transplants in Raleigh. We heard a lot of southern/midwest accents, more so than northeast accents.
-Has the Raleigh metro started to attract people from all over more than the northeast? This would be a plus for us.
-Are your neighbors friendly? How do you compare the friendliness of your neighbors in the Raleigh area to other places you have lived?
I live in a small neighborhood, which I think lends itself to people being more friendly to each other. Thinking about our neighbors, I know we have folks from the following states in addition to North Carolina (in no particular order other than how they pop into my mind):
VA
WV
FL
CA
WI
MD/DC
ND
PA
Most states are represented by 1 or 2 neighbors and the rest are native North Carolinians. I'm not aware of any of my neighbors being from the Northeast, though we don't live in one of the areas that heavily attracts Northeasterners (e.g. Cary).
Neighbors on my street in Apex are from all over including New York, Michigan, Texas, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and some international transplants from France. So with that in mind I'd say the area has definitely started to attract people from all over.
From a friendliness standpoint I'd say individual experiences will vary. My neighborhood has pockets where everyone socializes, the children play together etc. and others where they don't. For me Apex is less friendly than the neighborhoods I have lived in Raleigh, Durham and Winston-Salem but that is just my personal experience.
Does it make a difference for you where people are from?
Most people here are pretty nice folk - I think you attract what you give. If you are nice, kind, and friendly I bet most of your neighbors will be the same.
We're in Clayton and our neighborhood has a diverse population. Our neighbors include people from WI, WV, VA, OH, MD, Germany and Iran. Love my neighbors!
We live in Cary and I don't actually have all that many neighbors from the northeast contrary to the stereotype. This is a very diverse area as a whole and can't really be pigeonholed.
