I don't like living in Fayetteville and my husband is willing to commute so we can move. On the plus side, he'll most likely be commuting against traffic when heading towards work. Trying to decide where to live is the difficult part. Top priorities are low crime and good schools (elementary and middle), of course. Looking at Holly Springs, Apex, Cary... since the commute would be hwy 87 to US 1, back and forth, although other parts of the triangle aren't off the table. And would it be too much to ask for a safe, family-friendly neighborhood with lots of kids playing outside? And preferably somewhere not too congested? Although, congestion is not a deal breaker since it's probably unavoidable. Budget up to $500k.

We live in Cary and I know there a couple people in my neighborhood who commute to Fayetteville. Other than that your list of wants is pretty much all of Cary, Apex and Holly Springs, so get a realtor to help you narrow it down.

My father lives in Lochmere and commuted to Fayetteville for 20 years. If I were to consider it I'd want a home very very close to US1.

US1 isn't that big of a help w/ a Fayetteville commute from Wake Co. You want to be close to 40/95 or 401 or 210. US 1 will get you to Sanford and on to 87, though, but if you want to be close to Raleigh that's not your best bet to come in.

I'd look at Fuquay, Holly Springs, Angier, but you might also look at Garner, too. Garner to Fayetteville is about an hour commute hopping on 40 to 95.

Do you need to commute to Bragg, or Fayetteville? If it's Bragg look at 210 and 401 coming in, or the 40 to 95 to 295. It's gonna be 30 min from Bragg to Sanford on 87 and then another 25-30 on US 1 to Apex, etc. I think you'll find that 87 is going to take you too far west if you want to be in Wake Co. 87 is good for going to Pittsboro, Chapel Hill, etc. I have driven that road for decades.

One of our friends works in Raleigh and her husband is on base at Bragg. They live in Clayton and are happy with the commute on both sides...may be worth considering. And 500k in Clayton would buy a heck of a mansion really...

You'd think Clayton would be closer, but if you map it, Garner (1 hr, 2 min) is just as close as Clayton (1 hr 5 min) and closer to downtown Raleigh (15 min vs 25 min). Fuquay is about 52 min from Bragg according to google, but 32 min from downtown Raleigh. Cary is around 1 hr 13 min from Bragg.

I would look close to 40 if I were you.

I did it for a week when I had an assignment at the NCDOT traffic safety office in Fayetteville - it was ok but it would be awful if it was permanent. The engineer that I worked for that week commuted from Clayton so somewhere in the area would probably be more doable.

I am aware of a couple of Fort Bragg families that live in Cary and the husbands commute down.
