We were FLSA exempt but worked long hard hours. Many times I came in all night for production problems with no extra pay.

We had lots of new stuff to learn and use.

By law, the H1-B's should be the first layed off and the last hired. Remember the program's purpose.

Its purpose was perverted by rotten employers advertising jobs at insanely low salaries. When nobody applied, the companies filed for a visa to bring in a foreign national at low pay.

Used to be common to see an engineering job advertised in a newspaper or magazine at a salary way below market. When you saw that, you knew that the employer was just playing a game to hire someone from outside the U.S. "See, we advertised the position but no one would take it, so we had no choice but to hire someone from outside the U.S. The job market is too tight otherwise." Total BS, of course. IEEE Spectrum magazine finally adopted a policy not to run such ads. Most other magazines and newspapers are so hungry for advertising income that they'll print almost anything.

Does it even matter? Most recruiting these days is behind the scenes with Dice, LinkedIn and the like. Some roles that pop up in LI are there to go through the same motions you mentioned but are no longer open or in the final stages of interviewing.

They are building a 500K+ office in Austin. Might be consolidating to there.

Yes I'm aware of how people find jobs today. My point was, there were (and still are) bottom feeders in the job market who play games and will take advantage of every legal avenue to hire people at bottom wages.

Why anyone would still listen to what this guy said is astounding. He left with a fat paycheck from GE knowing full how much he exposed it to bad paper through their financial arm.

His tactic of 5-15% performance improvement required was implimented at an employer I used to work for that was top of the industry. It basically eliminated teamwork and decimated them over the long run. Now many of their buildings sit empty while former CEO's sit back with hundreds of millions of undeserved dollars.

My hubby is one of them. Needless to say, things are a bit tense around here.
