Take a look at Brentwood.

Convenient but older. Might also be better than the current garbage construction.

27614 and 27615 would be my picks for what you're looking for. We live in 27615 and I can be in RTP in 20-25 minutes assuming there aren't any accidents. I would not consider Brentwood because I know multiple people who have had their homes broken into there (one three times!!). Your budget will limit you somewhat but you can still find something as long as your expectations are in line with what that will offer. We love living in north Raleigh.

You might consider Rolesville. 290k will buy a nice house. 27571 it is a little farther north.

Seems to be a bit of a longer drive to/from RTP than what the OP wants, and that's without traffic. With traffic, that commute becomes particularly nightmarish.

Default zip codes Raleigh area

W RE N. Raleigh possibility:
The Triangle Business Journal and Chamber of Commerce and other sources are available to view residents stats on Education and Income and property values and density of area.
If you work or may work in the RTP or are employed with tech skills proximity to the RTP is valued. Its also desirable as in general more highly 'educated' people live closer to that location especially in areas where there the average home value and family income is higher. Putting it all together much of N. Raleigh area is generally good and some high rental areas are now becoming more owner residing in areas west of capital blvd. Should you be in tech I'd recommend 27613, if you have children and wish for more space than 27614- this latter zip is further from downtown in out a bit but boosts the highest socio econ ranking and there is bit less density. 27612 and 27609 are more in midst of things, space is tighter but you closer to more and especially good with teens and for people who wish to travel downtown. There are color coded maps that show population stats in the area. There are large statistical variation in income and education from for example 27607 vs the eastern Wake co regions and more starkly outside of wake county. Crudely in Wake county if you drawn a vertical line down the middle it will be higher income and educational attainment in the west side. This side is closer to durham and chapel hill as well as RTP so more going's on and jobs.
Right now If I was moving here with children and work was anywhere nearish- I'd choose Holly Springs-
If I could afford it, I'd love to live in $ Carrboro-where more walk about and hangout is best-

Get something closer to your job of at all possible. Nothing is more valuable in your life than time. Just calculate how much extra hours you will be commuting times what would be your hourly salary for the life of your mortgage. Also just ten miles further away would add $90,000 in standard vehicle mileage cost to in 30 yrs. Some people don't mind alone time sitting in traffic. It drives others, like me, buggy.

I would not call Brentwood "convenient" to RTP--it's on the East side of town. But yes, it's within budget.

Yeah, Brentwood is a 440>Wade>40 commute. That could be brutal at rush hours.
