Hi I need to rent a prom dress for my daughter and have no earthly idea where to begin! Buying is not an option after I saw a dress the size of a box of cereal priced at $700! Where does a clueless dad rent a dress in Raleigh?

I don't think there are any places that rent prom dresses. Tuxedos, yes. But not the gowns. But there's no reason you need to spend $700 for a prom dress. Even paying full price, you should be able to find something in the $100-200 range (heck, you can even find a dress at Nordstrom for under $100). But you can also check out thrift stores and consignment stores.

If you really really want to rent, try renttherunway.com.

Do that ^

My girlfriend uses it, my sister, and a few of the female co-workers. Nothing but positive things to say.

One or more of the high schools around here has a Prom Shoppe selling used dresses.

If your daughter wants this within your budget, she'll figure it out.

but renttherunway is a good idea.

RentTheRunway is amazing. You get a discount on your first order, but even better, it's easier to find a unique dress. Just make sure she has accurate measurements for sizing!

There is a prom dress outlet in Hillsborough. They have thousands of dresses in every size and color. Prices start at $99. A word of warning though, the place is crazy on Saturdays and they have so many dresses it can be overwhelming.

Another vote for rent the runway. I've used it countless time. It's seriously my favorite thing. Plenty of options below $150.

They allow you to pick two sizes. I would do the 8 day options and have the dress arrive several days early if for some reason neither size she picks work. They will send you a different dress. I would look at the designers size chart and read the reviews. Certain brands can run very small and others true to size.

It won't help this year, but Apex UMC held a prom shop and gave away over 600 gowns last weekend. Keep that in mind for future years. (Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with the church, but have friends who volunteer.)
