OP here - I'm only about 3 minutes into this podcast. It's hilarious. This is why I see so many mattress stores. Thanks for posting this podcast!

It's bringing back such bad memories of shopping for mattresses!

Mattress Firm is a waste of retail space.

This exact same configuration can be found right in front of the Pickle in Durham.

Here goes a few more store combos that you see very often.

-ROSS/Bed Bath and Beyond. There's quite a few shopping centers out there where both are sitting right next to each other.

-Walmart Supercenter/Lowe's or Walmart Supercenter/Sam's Club. The latter is pretty logical due to ownership, but there's quite a few instances where you would see the former.

I listened to the entire podcast about mattresses. It shed some light on this store grouping, not specifically, but in general terms. The podcast said the US has more retail space than any other country because we like to buy things. (you think??) That explains why we have so many mattress stores. Mattress stores and Starbucks are considered "higher order goods", frequently by those with more disposable income. Because of all the stores, we do more shopping, and shopping is tiring, which means we need coffee. Not sure how the cell phone carrier relates.
