I live in the Five Points neighborhood and there's been a lot of chatter about the break-ins over the past few months. If you don't leave valuables visible in your car or your car unlocked, you won't be victimized. Very rarely are these thieves breaking windows or forcing entry without reason. 90% of the thefts have occurred with unlocked cars (some even stealing cars where people left keys in their cars....). The rest were smashed windows when the car was locked but items were visible in the car.
this.
I might not be on the right Nextdoor neighborhood or listserv, but almost everytime I see that a car gets broken into or rifled, it was unlocked or an easy mark.
Our cars got rifled through for the first time (20 years) a year ago. They weren't locked.
Heard on the radio of a bunch of car break-ins at apartments near the Falls/Millbrook intersection, and a robbery spree last night near Capital/Durant - crime definitely isn't localized to ITB.
It happens even here in N Raleigh. I see it on NextDoor all the time. We lock our cars and park them in the garage though so no issues yet.
I've been watching SpotCrime for about a year around Mayfaire and Hunting Ridge apartments in North Raleigh, and burglaries / theft are by far the majority, happening every day.
We caught one on Camera. He slid right up to my fiance's car, pulled the handle, found it was locked and walked away. He let my car be, I think because she had a bunch of (mostly worthless) stuff visible in her car at the time.
