I think most of the land is private property. After speaking with some, I think most of the land owners are well acquainted with detectorists. The battlefield itself is a protected land of course.

i have had good luck with City and County.
several times, one of the employees knows
someone who metal detects and has directed
me to the areas that are fruitful for that friend.
I heard from someone awhile back that the land just east of East Clayton Elementary is where the Union Army camped when they were coming through. Not sure if that is true, or where exactly. I know they have built/are building a subdivision close to there. Not sure if you would need to get permission to look between the school and subdivision, or who to ask?
I recently found a NC Sunburst Civil War button in my yard when I was just messing around with the detector. Off Ray Rd and Strickland. Still unsure why this location.
