They're probably technically charging for their travel, not for their notary services. Traveling notaries are not uncommon. When we did a refinance with our credit union, they sent a traveling notary to our house, and the charge was about $50. My husband and I were both notaries at the time, and I remember talking at length with the woman about how to become a traveling notary. She said she worked evenings weekends and stayed within x miles from home and was sent wherever the company told her to go within those parameters.

Most banks have a notary that customers can use free of charge.

You can also use the Find a Notary directory on the NC Secretary of State's site - it'll show notaries near you and their hours on just about any day of the week.

You're welcome, Mike! I know it's voluntary and we're not required to list ourselves on the directory, it's still a start.
