Van Reimsdyk can help, but on a good team he's a third-pairing D.
With the Ryan signing, the Canes are still $6.5M below the salary floor... and that's assuming that they keep three goalies under contract. No doubt Francis will try to move Lack or Ward as part of a trade to improve the top nine forwards. If
Francis cannot, he will have to buy one of them out. He has been heard to say that the UFA market is a risky proposition. I am 90% certain that Justin Williams will be signed, but that's still not enough. The list of UFAs at The top 30 unrestricted free agents of 2017 | The Hockey News is not encouraging.

And that's all we need him to be. Hanifin-Faulk and Pesce-Slavin are your top two pairings. Give Haydn Fleury a shot at that bottom pairing and have somebody competent to play with him so you don't repeat what happened with Hanifin in the first half of last season when he was with a changing cast of characters (Dahlbeck, Tennyson) that didn't do much for his development.
Assuming RF does not trade Faulk. The recent rumor is that Faulk has been offered in trade for a top-three forward.
I'm pretty sure Pierre Lebrun quashed those shortly after draft day when he said his sources indicated Francis wasn't interested in moving any of our top 4 defensemen.
Bales is a good goaltending coach. Assuming Marc-Andre Fleury is selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft today and the Pittsburgh Penguins then-assistant goaltending coach has been working with Matt Murray and other goaltending prospects, I can understand the Penguins' decision to move on.
What happened with the Penguins stays with them. Bales' focus is with the Hurricanes.
It was kinda strange, but I guess he was Fleury's guy. As a Pens fan the situation is sad, but I guess better than having no #1 goalie, plus we have Jarry as a good prospect. Heck, it worked for 2 years having two starting goalies, you think they might want to keep the formula going for one more year. Fleury is a great guy and teammate. I was hoping he would stick it out through the entire playoffs, but one bad game and he's out (wasn't even his fault really). Vegas should be competitive in a few years if they draft well, but I feel for any goalie stuck in that situation. As much as Pitt/Carolina trade, I thought (well hoped) he could end up a Cane one day, but salary is probably too much to swallow understandably.
I'm a Pens fan with a soft spot for the Canes, as I used to live there during the Cup days. I got to watch the Canes play the Flyers/Pens a lot in recent years and they're a fun team to watch. You guys have a good fast offensive team to build on. I was hoping you'd make the playoffs the last 2 years, but poor season starts followed by streaking runs at the end. You definitely needed a change in Goalie and probably defense, but should have a bright future. The East is really competitive. Even Tampa Bay missed out this year. Toronto should be good for years to come too. Just having a good record in OT games can make all the difference these days getting in our out of the playoffs. Was nice to see Hainsey carry the cup this year too.
Good luck this year. Help keep the Flyers out again. :-)
Former first-round pick Ryan Murphy and Eddie Lack both traded to Calgary for a prospect and a future 6th round pick. Carolina retains some salary for Lack.
Not terribly long ago, 2013ish to be exact, Murphy was arguably the top prospect in the system. He quickly fizzled out and had lower draftees and Noah Hanifin take his spot. I'm no fortune-teller but he's going to be 25 next March and he hasn't shown a whole lot, I imagine he's going to be a minor-leaguer for the most part.
Will miss Lacks taco commercials but he needed to go. He simply just couldn't be a reliable backup or starter here.
Murphy had more than enough chances here to establish himself. On occasion he showed talent, but he was also mistake-prone and had trouble defending consistently against large forwards. It's possible he will do better in Calgary, but the more likely scenario is that he will play in the AHL or eventually in Europe.
Like Boychuk, it wasn't his fault that the Canes drafted him too high.
