I know there is a quarry near Umstead State Park, but wondering if there ever was a lead mine?

I know this isn't as important a question like pizza or grocery stores.

I don't know, but there were Indian wells on Indian Wells Road in Cary.

You may be onto something. Apparently there IS good pizza on Leadmine Road.

Not really lead, but there are graphite mines underneath the neighborhoods there.

I recall hearing that there was something like that around where the Montessori School is now across from Mine Shaft (which would be a logical name for a path leading up to the mine).

Having grown up in the area I can tell you for sure there is a mine entrance on the hill off Lead Mine rd. My friends and I would ride our bikes all over the area and would fish the 2 ponds, one is Greystone lake and the other is smaller which was fed by Greystone. We discovered the entrance one day while searching for another pond. The entrance is on the hill behind a red barn which was visible from Lead Mine rd. (not sure if it still exists as this was a long time ago.).

If my memory is correct the mine entrance is in the center of this map.
