Publix, Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Rocko Jocko's Grocery, etc all do the same thing.
You go in, buy your groceries, wait in line, take your stuff to your car and go home.
Without a dent in your car from a stray shopping cart if all goes well. The wifey can
save 60 bucks or more easy depending on how much time she spends on her coupons
and checking sales fliers at any grocery store at any given time. A grocery store is one
of the last places I want to be. I think I'm the only person that doesn't understand all
the hype over grocery stores? As far as Publix is concerned, they get it zoned commercial
and they can put it where I live. I'll cash out and live happy elsewhere!

This is the first I am hearing about Publix considering a store in and expanding into Chatham County.

First, these are the grocery participants:

Supermarkets
  • Harris Teeter #137, Chatham Downs Shopping Center, 88 Chatham Downs Drive, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27517-6111
  • Lowe's Foods #167, Chatham Crossings, 11312 US Highway 15 501 North, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27517-6374
Hypermarket
Walmart #3182, 12500 US 15 501 North, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27517-6024

Second, United States Highway 15/501 North will continue to see additional commercial development.

Third, I have not seen a site plan for a possible Publix supermarket-anchored retail center for the location in discussion.

I believe the re-zoning is the issue. I can understand people living in a semi rural area being opposed, but as noted it is going to be developed one way or another...everything semi rural is getting pushed farther out.

semi-rural to some might be urban sprawl to others.

I wish they'd put a Publix somewhere from Southwest Durham to Chapel Hill. Their deli and bakery especially offer a lot more than Harris Teeter, Kroger and of course Food Lion. Those two departments are far finer than those of their competitors. There's another biggie that is supposed to move into the Triangle - Wegmans, many saying it even outdoes Publix. Why is the zoning thing such a concern? It sure isn't a megastore like Walmart or Target. I hope Publix succeeds somewhere in this direction already.
