I agree with the others that you're doing something wrong in your search. North Raleigh is practically nothing but 4+ bedroom homes on 1+ acres in the $600-$900K range (OK, a bit of an exaggeration as there are homes both above and below that price range and not all North Raleigh homes will be updated, but you get my point). Just last year I looked for a home with very similar criteria to what you're looking for (budget didn't go quite that high) and I can tell you that in addition to North Raleigh, areas around Hillsborough and south of Chapel Hill are also full of houses that meet your criteria.

One other thing to note: you mention a 30 minute commute to downtown Raleigh for restaurants/stuff to do, but just to make sure you're aware...downtown Raleigh isn't the only place with restaurants/stuff to do as both Durham and Chapel Hill/Carrboro have as many or more nice restaurants as Raleigh and as much or more stuff to do than Raleigh. Based on this, I think you can safely expand your search considerably and still meet all of your criteria. Also of note, the RDU airport is centrally located between the downtowns of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill so most residential areas here put you within 30 minutes of the airport (the big exception being south of Raleigh, which will typically be >30 minutes).

I think you would benefit greatly from a trip up here to get a sense for the area and the pros/cons of the different towns.

I just did a search on realtor.com for North Raleigh ONLY, 4 bedroom, price range $600-900k, one acre or more lot. Returned 116 results even with this limited search area. I did not look at any photos to determine the upgrades.

You really should be dealing with a realtor if you're serious about buying.
I just had someone come down from NYC. The weeks leading up, we talked a lot and determined which areas were not only best for his family, but were in his price range and had the type of house he needed. Some things got added, some eliminated. By the time he arrived, we had zeroed in on less than 5 neighborhoods, we saw those homes that really interested them, and we wrote and negotiated an offer. Within 2 days.

Barony Overlook. Stanley Martin Homes will build you a decent tract home on over an acre and well within your budget.
Right now, they show a lot at 1.454 acre.

Pretty good location.

OP, zoning for "an acre" usually specifies a minimum lot size of 40,000 square feet, which is .92 acres.
Often developers will pull their lot sizes down to very close to .92 acre to build to minimal lot sizes.
If you are OK with just slightly less, and can find a lot with a good site orientation, searching for that slightly smaller lot size may yield more results for you to consider.

Another consideration....
RDU Air Traffic Noise.
Many areas of Cary, Apex, and N Raleigh experience planes overhead. If you want to avoid that, select carefully.
