well that is until the area with the nice affordable housing fills up and then prices go up due to increased demand and you have to move farther out to find the same thing that you were previously looking for, which leads to longer drives, which leads to more traffic and a longer commute.
It's the same story in every US city - we're just in the early stages of it.
I think another thing that helps in the Triangle is there are multiple employment epicenters. You have RTP, you have Downtown Raleigh, you have Downtown Durham which is growing on the employment front. There's talk about Chatham Park being the next RTP.
This is all good - it's not the typical urban/suburban model where everyone is commuting from outside toward the single urban employment center.

Agreed - also hopefully the tech companies around here will continue to innovate with work schedules (telecommuting or flexible schedules etc...) so that people aren't making their commutes on a daily basis
Just spent the past week+ commuting to my corporate HQ in Boston. Not even close. At all.
At least it's possible to get to downtown Boston without a car. I lived in Belmont and whenever I needed to go downtown, I'd hop on the #73 bus in front of my high school, take it to Harvard Square and hop on the Red Line to Park Street - public transit is not really an option here.
Is traffic generally worse than it was when I moved here in 2003? Absolutely.
Is my personal commute worse than it was when I moved here in 2003? Not really. I still get to work in 20 minutes or less.
Are our major arteries busier every year? Definitely.
Are there pockets of traffic that are crazy in places that used to have no traffic to speak of? Yes. NC55 from its southern terminus to Avent Ferry Road would be a good example.
it is still WAY easier to get around here than it is where I came from, and that area has deteriorated substantially since I got here.
