That's what I suspect as well - sort of how the FBI gets involved if there's a bank robbery but if your local mom and pop store got robbed, you wouldn't see the FBI anywhere.
Mom and Pop are not insured by the FDIC. Hitting a Stop&Rob is not a federal crime, but busting into a bank is.

Local TV reporter could not find any cameras by looking around the lots.

That doesn't necessarily mean there aren't any. Cameras don't have to look like cameras anymore. The ones we use look more like fire/smoke detectors, though granted that is indoors.
I read somewhere that the roommate had texted Cope at work asking if she had had left an item in
Cope's car. I hope the police have checked out the roommate to be sure that the
timing of that was a coincidence and not a set up.
