In late June & early July Liberty Mountain plays in Kings Mountain. The play was written for the town which was named for the Revolutionary War battle. The battlefield is currently in SC, but the border shifted, long ago. Many of the patriots who fought in the battle were from the NC back country, which included present-day Tennessee.

I didn't know about the play, but I did know about the Battle of Kings Mountain.
Colin Woodard's "American Nations" goes into the deep underlying drivers emplaced by the various waves of settlement. NC is interesting as it is a borderland between Greater Appalachia Tidewater and Deep South.

The annual run of the play is quite recent. There's a website for the play. I'm not surprised that you never heard of the play. By rights, NC Weekend should cover it, but I'm not holding my breath. The Charlotte TV stations should be covering it & they don't. It's my understanding that DAR & SAR state chapters send notifications to local chapters.

I have seen reviews of his work and just can't say I agree with his placement of NC at all. I would not recommend this. He doesn't really get North Carolina, IMO.
