Having recently moved to Raleigh from California, I'd like to learn more about NC's history so I can better assimilate. Any recommendations for a good NC history book?

NORTH CAROLINA HISTORY, HISTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA

If you want to really get back to the roots of all the counties, this book is not so up-to-date but it is accurate when it was written. These books have facts that are probably not in any other book you will find. I thought there were five volumes. All 100 counties are individualized from their beginning

Go to your local library and look under Dewey decimal numbers 917.56 for geography that usually contains more than geography and 975.6 for North Carolina history books.

The following book is very entertaining and interesting. Hope you find one that includes music.

Very good suggestion.

Also at your local library ask for the password for NCLive. You will need a library card to access this. This website has a wealth of information on many different subjects.

For a coffee table more pictures than text book, Hugh Morton's North Carolina is a great one.

For one of the more important topics relevant to North Carolina in the past and today you can't miss with this one: https://www.amazon.com/Holy-Smoke-No...rolina+history

I think The Encyclopedia of North Carolina would be another good one to thumb through and that should keep you reading for a long, long time.

Bless youKrozenthiel

I am so pleased by your request and wish you the very best. It is good to see your interest in the rich history of our state. You might try the NC office of Archives and History or the NC historical society. They have a web page.

The NC History Museum downtown is really well done and an afternoon spent there would give you a great overview of NC History. The museum gift shop has a nice selection of books to browse through, too, and see what strikes your fancy.

Ditto for the Museum of History. An excellent way to spend a few hours in the AC and learn a lot...

Your NC History lesson begins with a trip to Manteo to see Paul Green's production of The Lost Colony. I think it's been playing there more than 75 years now. It's a must see!
