With these almost 100 degree temperatures and high humidity, my central A/C system seems to have trouble getting the temperature to below 75 degrees on the thermostat. I've had my system checked by Air Innovations (Travis is the owner and he's very honest) and he has been very reliable and honest. Very good reviews from this company as well. He certified that the system is working well, coils are clean, refrigerant pressure is good, house is well sealed and the system capacity is good for the size of the house. Despite that, the system has trouble keeping the house below 75 degrees when the temperature outside is over 95. I also run a dehumidifier in my crawlspace to make sure the humidity there is well-controlled.
How are your central A/C systems doing in this heavy NC heat this weekend and what brands do you guys have, or what service companies/installers you used? I asked some HVAC people and they said most systems are designed to lower the temperature in your house by 20 degrees no matter how "tight" the house is built. So that means if the outside temperature is 95, then the system will easily cool to a thermostat setting of 75 but have a much harder time keeping the thermostat setting below 75.
I have it set at 77 so far, since I don't want the A/C running constantly due to cost and also wear and tear.

I'm less worried about the cost than sweating in my house for 2-3 months.
I have 10 year old Carrier equipment, and a probably-now 17+ year old unit that services the 2nd floor. I leave that one higher because it IS going to break down sooner rather than later - it's 20 years old in NC, and my house is older and not well-sealed so it's always hotter upstairs anyway.
I've got an ecobee so it adjusts the temperature whether I'm home or away or sleeping. I can also set the temperature via a mobile app so I can bring the temperature down before I go home if I let it go up to 80+ during the day.
We're in new construction with 6" exterior walls with good insulation all the way around. Carrier unit is running efficiency and keeping us very comfortable. We used Enhanced Air in Raleigh, and they just happened to be the installer down here. We'll be staying with them.
A properly designed system will run almost continuously at 95 degrees and high humidity. You really do want them to run if for no other reason than to remove humidity. A system that stops and starts suffers from more wear and tear than one that is running at a steady state.
Out apartment is struggling, to say the least. It's midnight and 85 degrees in here. If I set it to 84 or lower, the inside temp will go up to 85. When I got home from my 12 hour shift, it was 87 in here. Maintenance is supposed to be out here tomorrow...
