Are these a common occurrence? I was looking up the apartments that I am checking out via google news and saw that all around Raleigh it seems to be a common thing because of lit candles or cigarettes.

I don't think they're more or less common than anywhere else. Fires happen. And it's the nature of apartments that it's going to affect more than one unit. Unavoidable really.

That's a bit sucky to know. In Miami, fires usually happen more during winter, although our winters are extremely mild if existent. People leave their heaters on and things happen. I just wouldn't want to leave my cats one day for vacation and come back to nothing. I don't know, it seemed like a weird thing to come by pretty often in the news in Raleigh.

But I'm in agreement with hertfordshire, but I'd bet there are places where there are more apartment fires than average. Places like Detroit or Shreveport, LA.

BTW, the most common reason for a house fire isn't incense or candles. It's cooking in the kitchen.

There's always a risk of that when you live in an apartment setting. But I don't think it's as common as you may be imagining. Remember that for every one alarming news story you read, there are millions of apartment dwellers who have never experienced a fire.

Only take the first floor on wood frame apartments.

Many substantial looking buildings on the outside have wooden frames and no fire escapes.

Very lax building codes here and in many other states.
