Hi there.

So we just arrived in Cary, and we are continuing the quest of finding a home.

We saw some places really close to train track, what are your recommendations with this?

How bad would that be, do trains run during the night?

Cheers.

Found this old post, but just wanted some more up to date info

There are three tracks through Cary, with various levels of use.
1. Along Chapel Hill Road up through Morrisville.
2. Along Old Apex Road.
3. Along Davis Drive, cutting over to NC 55 from Apex to Durham.

Which are you thinking of?

As Mike said, depends on where the house is.

If it is train #3 (from Mike's post) it would not bother me at all. That train only passes twice a day and it is pretty slow going. Occasionally it will have two round trips, but that is pretty infrequent.

I think RDU Air Traffic Noise is just as important a consideration.

Railroad crossings have the most (horn noise). Local train depot in Cary shows passenger train schedules.

Nearby traffic noise, nearby fire stations, yuge school car pool lines are also worth considering.

Drive through an area you are considering... during peak commute times.

#1 is also going to get increased use in 10 years with the commuter rail line between downtown Raleigh and downtown Durham up and running (about 8-10 trips a day)

If you have to ask then you might be too close. The real question is how close would you live to resell? Farther is better.

Look at the house for sale. Look for comparable houses that are NOT on/near the train tracks. If those homes are selling for a lot more than the on/near the tracks, then resale is an issue and you may not like living there, either.

If comparable homes are selling for similar prices, you will probably be fine with resale and with living there.

I live 1/2 mile away. They do not bother me at all, eventually you learn to tune it out. I actually enjoy the sound now.
