Im thinking very seriously about moving out of the state of CA. My top two places are Raleigh and Austin. I would like to get the top 3 things that are pro and top 3 cons of living in Raleigh. Fyi Im looking to finish my masters in engineering, hope to start a business and have lots of fun. Im a single 30 year old guy who wants to do everything.

What I like on paper as far as I can tell from internet land is the beautiful green landscape, proximity to amazing schools, closeness to the mountains and beaches, and of course being in a fast growing place that will be better in the future.

Im just fishing for info any way I can get it.

Austin has more of a "cool" PR factor.

The Triangle is a great place to start a business, and may be "cool" in a quieter way. And, it is definitely an easy place to live. Convenient, safe, easy.
Some folks will tell you that growth is changing the area negatively, though.
We certainly have engineering opportunities. Of course, your specialty is a consideration.

How do you like to have fun wherever you are? What do you do?

Austin and the Triangle are two different worlds. While both are left of center typically the Triangle feels much less "hipsterish" and has a diversity of personalities whereas Austin (like Seattle) seems to have more of a uniformity that you either fit into, or don't.

There are jobs here in most areas but stronger in computer technologies, medicine, and higher education. Manufacturing has been waning for many years. If I were moving these days I would look very specifically at jobs in my specialty before making a decision. They say there are no boring places just boring people bit I have been to Austin and it is "hipper". Then again it does rain here, maybe something to consider in the future. I prefer green to brown.

If I was young, single and could choose to live anywhere in the U.S. I don't think I'd pick Raleigh. Not that it isn't a perfectly nice place to live, but.. eh. It really depends on what you like to do for fun. And it's a bit of a drive to either the mountains or the ocean - not something I think most people do frequently (i.e. a couple times a month).

I'd actually recommend moving around more before you get tied down with family/house/whatever - I spent 24 years in the DC area and 11 here, and I definitely wish I'd lived more places during my life.

Yup.

And, a peek in the mirror often reveals them.

Where in California are you coming from?

What I can tell from your past post is that NC would not be a good fit for you at all. So please stay in California. and keep raising your taxes out there. NC does not need higher taxes at all.

I've never been to Austin so can't comment on that but here are my pros and cons:

Pros:
1. Family oriented
2. Affordable
3. Strong job market in IT

Cons:
1. About 3 hours from anywhere I truly want to be (beach, mountains, etc)
2. Cost of living is rising rapidly
3. If I was young and single I would want to be in a bigger city.

Abe Lincoln said, "Most people are about as happy as they make their mind's up to be."

That said, there are things to consider. I think that in the absence of a really specific hobby, or specific tastes in weather, or a particular Music Scene (although I've enjoyed the Music Scene here), the Triangle would suit OP.

BUT, if you really like hiking, maybe somewhere closer to mountains and views would be better. I had a friend moving from Illinois and was between Raleigh and Charlotte, I told him Charlotte since he's such a hiker, less than 2 hours from Asheville.

Austin is cooler and Texas doesn't have state income tax. I think it just depends what you're looking for. There are a lot of strip malls in both places, but I think Raleigh feels more suburban.
