The people that tore down the statue are f'n idiots. That's not a good way to get people to take you seriously and does nothing but give the far right more fodder for their base. The last thing Durham needs is to become another Charlottesville. Virginia has been a hotbed over the last couple of years. First, Danville and it's Confederate flag controversy and now Charlottesville. Danville recently put new signs at the city limits that says "Welcome to Danville. A city of diversity and inclusion". I fail to keep a straight face every time I see those signs. A few months ago when I was downtown paying my light bill, I saw a shirtless guy walking across the Union Street bridge over the Dan River with a big ass swastika tattoed on his back. Danville is such a lovely place.
It was embarrassing as hell seeing my home state make headlines last year over HB2. I don't want to see NC follow Charlottesville's example, though by the looks of things, I don't think this is gonna go quietly.
Create an exhibit in a museum called "Stupid Sh1t People Did" for all I care and stick the statues there, along with a documentary of the current presidency.
They could have proved their point by throwing a sheet over the statue. Instead they destroyed government property, spit on it, kicked it, etc. These are just people looking for attention - that's it and that's all. They may not even be sure about the history that they're supposedly protesting.
Wonder where they were to begin with for it to escalate as far as it did.
State Capitol police were probably in Raleigh. this was in Durham. Some Durham Co sheriff deputies were apparently there videoing things so I wouldn't be surprised to see some arrests.
