Our 17 year old is away at school and will not be driving for the duration of the school year. My insurance company has told me they cannot place coverage "on hold" or "suspend" for this period (meaning that our monthly bill continues to be crazy high - perks of having a boy!). Has anyone else been successful in this regard, or is this how North Carolina operates? (We were able to do this in NJ). Just curious what others have experienced. Thanks.

In NC, if you have a driver license, you have to have insurance. Maybe he could surrender his license, and then wouldn't need insurance.

You can't do it in NC. The only way is for him to surrender his license which is obviously illogical.

There are a lot of backwards things about NC insurance law - this is one of them.

In NC it is state law that college students are considered part of the household and must remain on your insurance even if they don't have a vehicle with them. The only way to remove him from your policy would be if he surrenders his license to the DMV. Most kids are not willing to do that, but the good news is that after 3 years the rate should decrease significantly.

That's so crazy. What if you take public transportation?

Then you don't need a drivers license and you don't need insurance.

I know, like I said, it's dumb. Just because people take public transportation doesn't mean they don't want or need a license. i have had plenty of friends who've lived in NYC without a car and kept their licenses on the once-in-a-blue-moon chance they want or need to drive.

Exactly. This would prohibit you from getting a rental car if you ever traveled.

If you're an adult with a clean driving record and don't own a car, the cost of insurance would be extremely nominal.
