First, is it likely that I'd have storm damage? I'm afraid if I hire someone they will "find" damage whether it is really there or not. How would I know? Second, a few people have recommended Storm Guard. Has anyone used them in the Triangle? I will check them out on Yelp.
This is the worst possible recommendation. The knowledge base of an insurance adjuster is pretty limited. I would not trust their judgement as to whether my roof needed any sort of repairs.

That's actually not true, but having an insurance adjuster come out to look at it means filing a claim. I would have a trusted roofer come see it, and that probably doesn't include a company called Storm Guard. You're wondering if a company called Storm Guard might "find" damage???
Some years ago we had some wind damage on our roof. I was out of town so had my wife call the insurance adjuster. He came out and told her there just a few missing shingles and her husband should be able replace them, (second floor). Needless to say when I got home I went and had an unpleasant discussion with my agent. In other words get an estimate from a reliable contractor first.

Baker Roofing is long time Raleigh roofing company, I trust them. And Roofwerks - they did my last roof. Excellent work, ethical folks. I would get a roofer to give your roof a review and then determine if you need to file a claim. A colleague was telling me today about her current experience with this and her insurance company. So I definitely start with a reputable roofing co. Good luck!

Yes! Start with a reputable roofing company and have them do a thorough inspection. If you do file a claim have your roofer there to meet with the adjuster - that way the roofer and adjuster are are on the same page.
I would get a contractor to come look at the roof. If they find damages you file a claim and then the adjuster will come out and check. The contractors will know what the insurance companies will allow for repair wise.
It really comes down to just getting up on the roof and looking at it. It's not some mystical art, you can see the damage when you get up close to it. They should be able to take pictures and back up the their claims of damage with you.
