I do most of our smaller scale home projects myself, but I'm wondering if it is worth it to have landscape lighting installed professionally. I'm not talking about a huge job or long cable runs here, and I'd like to use better quality fixtures than I see at Home Depot.
Has anyone done this themselves with a good result? Alternately, can anyone recommend a good installer who is reasonably priced?
Any help is appreciated as always!
I shopped around for this a few years ago. Amazing price differences b/w big companies and the individuals who install landscape lights. I have been told that when we need these again, we will be doing them ourselves as it is quite simple and such low voltage (look online for better selection than at Home Depot and Lowe's). That said, where are you located? I will track down the name/number of the super nice guy that installed ours if you are nearby!
This guy does this as a side job in addition to his full-time job. I am not 100% certain that he is still "for hire." I contacted him and am waiting to hear back with confirmation.
My home is well lit with landscape lighting. All fixtures and wires are low voltage. Consists of 12 pathway lights and 2 spotlights on the trees in the front yard.
The hardest part was installing the transformer. Running the wire and installing the lights themselves was a walk in the park. You litterally lay the power wire and the lights themselves "clip" into the wire deep enough to make a connection and get you power. The transformer was the pricest part as we went with a 600w unit with timer. Overkill for what we have but it leaves us open to add more lights in the future.
My husband likes 'the look' homes have with outdoor lighting now, and I never laughed so hard (bless his heart) as when he installed some lights, solar-powered, from Home Depot, out in front of the house. Looked like some kid stuck a few solar-powered flashlights in the yard. I'll share the installer with him.
