Lot of people joking about panic and preparation (and I'm usually one of them), but this is the biggest hurricane EVER in the Atlantic. Definitely no joke and it has just as much chance of landfall at Charleston/myrtle beach as it Florida. A landfall in that area brings a hell of a storm to the Triangle.
The only thing I've ever done as far as preparing for a serious storm
is making sure my camera batteries are charged and ready to go. I'm
a firm believer in whatever is going to happen will happen and it is out
of my control...

I'm sure. The older I get the less I tend to worry about things I
have no control over. I use good common sense and take the necessary
precautions. If it's going to come, there's nothing I can do to stop it.

But it's something you do have control over. I'm not saying the Triangle needs to evacuate, but so many people refuse to do so in vulnerable areas.
We have more than enough notice - anyone with the means to do so on the coast between Florida and NC should be evacuating IMO.

This post is so full it, I can't even.
You're right, you can't control where the storm goes, but you can spend 10 minutes or an hour over the next day or so to make what happens after much more palatable for you and your family.
Good, then don't. Everything that needs to be done has been done...

seems like the forecast keeps shifting east so that Irma won't make direct landfall with Florida and is now skirting the Florida coast and heading for South Carolina/Charleston
When we got here a month ago, I was shocked to see regular unleaded at $2.19. I gassed up yesterday at $2.59.
We have flashlights, batteries, ice maker is going now and I'll get ziplock bags for them. Other than that, I'm just going to get some non-perishable food.

This was our only saving grace after Sandy (in NY). It was chilly at night but we had a nice hot shower to wake up to in the morning at least.
