After the debate on another thread about cabinetry meeting ceiling or having a soffit come down to meet it or just a shelf for accent lighting or bowls or flowers to sit on...
I expressed my opinion of what I liked to see, and what I considered getting your money's worth from the builder.
Though these are high end, I believe the same aesthetic can be achieved with much more affordable components.
Many of you won't like the stark appearance, but I like as few lines as possible:
I LIKE that kitchen design example quite a bit. Would work for me.
I also find that cabinetry loses value for storage and daily use when over about 7' off the floor. Comes from being married to a lady who is <5' tall, methinks.
And, with good planning, the unused storage space is unnecessary.
A less expensive alternative, and yes, it fits my personal esthetic, with apologies for cellphone photography:
Morgue was the first word that entered my mind as well, and I was getting ready to respond with this until I scrolled down and saw your response. I have no professional experience with interior design, but I do think I have some sense for what I like (no accounting for others' taste though). I normally do have an affinity for modern, minimalist, and even industrial-inspired things, but to my eye the kitchen just looks too medical, more suited for dissecting things than cooking them.
Floor color + cabinet color is nice, it's just that there is way too much of the cabinet color, and unfortunately I think this is the aspect of the design that I think the OP is saying he likes. It needs contrast in the counter tops, maybe dark grey concrete would look nice for this. In other words looking at those photos I don't know of any other way to fix what is broken except to put shorter top cabinets and paint the walls some shade grey, letting a small "line" of wall above the cabinets break up the white horror a bit. Simply painting the cabinets another color wouldn't work, we would then just have too much of whatever new color. Something daring like bright red chairs with stainless steel legs would help break up the agonizing monotony, or would at least make for an eye catching magazine photo. A nice backsplash would go a long way but wouldn't do anything for the side with the fridge. The only reasonably inexpensive fix for that photo I can think of would be to paint the walls dark grey, then maybe paint the cabinet trim to match.
I like the kitchen in the first photo, but I know it's a design style that doesn't appeal to many buyers. I think the cabinets going all the way up like that seems suited to the modern style with at least a 10' ceiling and also to apartment/loft type spaces where storage is at a premium. Most houses in this area or really anywhere outside of a city core type, except for a few scattered around, have lots of available storage for lesser used items in other areas, 9' ceilings (so either the main cabinet is shorter than ideal or the one on top is very small) and have a style that is not as as conducive to it.
MikeJ, we have also added up lighting in that space above and quite like it.

I like the lighting over the cabinets
