I may be spending a year as a visiting professor at Duke, and would like some advice regarding tennis coaching for my son. He's a reasonably good player - has played for a few years, and is quite keen about pursuing it further. Ideally, we'd like something where he can get regular (daily) coaching & drills, with a good group for practice.
We havent decided where to stay as yet - will really depend on schools and the tennis options. Are there some schools with good facilities / coaches? Would really appreciate suggestions.
A while ago I was visiting Hasentree country club on highway 98, and came across the fabulous tennis facilities there. The tennis coach was a former Davis Cup player for India. I really liked him but forget his name. Maybe he could help you...
My wife also works at Duke. Our 13 years old son plays a lot of tennis as well. We live in Cary and have tennis courts in the neighborhood. If you decide to live close by, they can practice together.
Have been here for about 6 years, and there are a number of good Teaching Professionals in the area. Some are better with teens than others. Most are located at Clubs.
You mention Coaching, some will travel to tournaments with your child as well, in addition to instruction.
I do not know of any in Durham, closest would be Chapel Hill Tennis Club. Others are at North Hills Club and Raleigh Rac. Club.
Also, for a good summer camp, all of the Universities have summer camps, but I would suggest you check out the one at Elon University.
Also, North Carolina has numerous Jr. tournaments.

As a visiting professor at Duke you should get access to the Duke faculty club. They have several hard courts and a few clay (hard-tru?) courts. However, I not sure about the quality of their professionals for player development. Your best option is Hollow Rock Racqueet and Swim Club, which is off Erwin Rd. about 3 miles from Duke's campus. They have around 20 clay courts and 4 hard courts and a goos pro staff for player development. I beleive they have an option that waives initiation fee if you are a member for only one year that is designed for folks on sabbatical like yourself. Here is their website:
Cary Tennis Park has good programs for rising players. Also, I know folks who go to NC State for instruction and coaching. This would be for youths who would be playing in tournaments throughout the southern US (but not Fla).
Raleigh Racquet Club has the best Juniors program around here. Paul Goode is the Pro and Thomas Manzur runs the Juniors. These guys are fantastic. Good luck!
