I heard that Durham is the most liberal city in North Carolina. I'm liberal, but mainly me and my cuz(we're both gay) want a place with not much homophobia. We are both really young and it would do us well to be somewhere with a lot of dance clubs/concerts/night life stuff going on.
I don't really know much about Durham, I mostly want to know like what sorts of people are in what areas. Like, a lot of older people in this area, a lot of families in another.
Thanks in advance!

It will depend on gender for you as well. You will find the lesbian population is more concentrated in Durham and Carrboro. Carrboro is a more liberal environmentally conscience community. I see lots of young lesbians (post college age) in Carrboro. Durham seems to have a more diverse population. There a lots of gay and lesbian families and singles in Durham. Most of the lesbian and gay population in Durham are in their late 20's and beyond.
In terms of Raleigh, the community is scattered. Downtown Raleigh near Mordecai and Five Points has a liberal vibe. There are probably more gay men in the Raleigh area. The gay bars are condensed in Raleigh. You have Legends, CC, and Flex. Most of the younger gay guys hang out at Legends(techno/dance mix). The mid to older crowd hangs out at CC (top forty music). The bears are at Flex. There used to be a lesbian bar on the corner of Peace and Glenwood called The L Club. It closed down.
Most everyone hangs out at Steel Blue on Highway 70 in Durham. It is known as a GLBT playground. I was there Saturday night and saw a nice mix of boys and girls. There is another club called Visions in Durham. It's a lesbian bar but not a lot of us go there right now.
Another note about the clubs around town. They are listed as members only clubs. It has something to do with the liquor laws. No worries. You can become a member at any of the clubs for a one time fee or get in with a member at a reduced fee.
I travel from Winston-Salem through Wilmington for work. I can tell you that a lot of my friends overnight at my house to go to our clubs.
DM if you have any specific questions.

Durham would be a good choice for you - lots going on in terms of arts, food, etc. - my coworker told me Durham is very very gay-friendly (esp. areas around the funky 9th Street District) -- dunno about dance clubs as I'm way out of that demographic. Next to Chapel Hill so you have that (but cheaper than Chapel Hill). Carrboro is most likely the most liberal city in America - more than Durham, even - that's on the other side of Chapel Hill.
People here will try to steer you away from Durham because they think it's crime-ridden. The majority of Durham isn't, but people don't realize that unless they live there like some of us.
Downtown Raleigh sounds like a great option for you as well, esp. in terms of nightlife - I think it's a lot pricier than Durham though.
I definitely recommend checking it out for yourself - also, where are you coming from? That would put Durham into perspective (for example if you're coming from another city, esp. a northern city, you'd laugh at the criticism of Durham re. crime. If you're coming from a small town with little diversity and little crime, you might not like it).
Definitely do a search on this board - especially the threads where Durham is hotly debated because you'll get all opinions there - and try blogs like these:

I would definitely suggest Chapel Hill. It's an area rich in the arts, and the residents tend to be not only northerners (not suggesting that northerners are superior to anyone else) but also politically liberal and active in the community. As for nightlife, you'll probably have to go to downtown Raleigh. Downtown Raleigh has great restaurants and theaters. I'm a SAHM, so I'm not familiar with dance clubs, but if you'll find them anywhere, it'll be in downtown Raleigh. Here's a link with some info. about stuff to do at night in Raleigh: Nightlife :: Downtown Raleigh, NC
CCs in Raleigh and BLEND in Chapel Hill are the only gay clubs I know of, but I'm not exactly their demographic... Good luck!

Chapel Hill is more liberal, but doesn't have the dance clubs/concerts/night life stuff that you're looking for. Durham is just more generally run down, but has the best gay dance club in the area. If you're looking for a lot of night life, I'd suggest D.C., which has a vibrant gay community, tons of night life, and more stuff to do.
