"Relocation and Release"
No turtles, whether native or exotic, captive-bred or caught from the wild, should be released to
the wild after time in captivity (especially if held with other animals) or relocated between
habitats in the wild. These releases and relocations jeopardize the health of wild populations by
spreading disease between populations, by potentially introducing animals from outside their
natural range that might out-compete the resident turtles, and by muddying the genetic pool from
which the resident populations reproduce. "

This is where I'd go to see if something can be done. Odds are low, it sounds like, that they could be relocated, but maybe they know some rescues that adopt out turtles?
