Yesterday, we got daughter's school picture samples. There are three 8x10" and 4 pages of other combinations of 5x7" or pocket size for the 3 poses.

First we didn't realize they were samples and thought they made a mistake. We used to have small samples (even with "Sample" printed on them) for us to pick and we normally justed pick one pose. Wife said we should buy all of them since she doesn't like those being shredded when sent back. I don't like this idea ...

Is this the general practice here? How do you deal with that?

Three poses? Wow, I"m going to have to press our school system to use another photographer! (We're in MA) We get one shot and if you don't like it, there's ONE picture re-take day. Take it or leave it.

I hope someone comes along to answer your question. I just had to write that I was impressed you actually had a choice with school photos!

When our kids went, you returned them if not interested. Call the school office.

My experience with a couple different schools is that the pictures they take in the spring are generally much better than the ones they take in the fall. They send you home the package then you can pick and choose what you want, order additional photos or send the whole thing back. Usually more money for the spring pictures. Send it back if you don't want the photos. The schools make some money off this as well as the photography studio.

Well, it is $15 for one 8'x10'. Keeping all 7 pages we ONLY pay $55 instead of $90 (7th free) or $108. With the full size prints avaiable I can easily scan and print at a much cheaper price with the similar quality. But, probably we'll order a couple to keep them in business.

If you dont return them they will charge you. So here is the problem I have with this. They take pictures of our kids and if we are not interested (in our school there is no opt out) they get to keep our kids pics. That is creepy. Even if you land up buying them all, they still have the negatives. You should be given an option, IMHO.

What usually happens to me is one of my kids will decide they have to have the stickers of themselves or the book marks or the luggage tag or whatever. Then it starts to add up for sure.

our daughters school did that one year. I actually liked it, because I knew what the pics looked like BEFORE i bought them.

I agree that for whatever reason the pics taken in spring are better than the ones in the fall. But my dd's school hasnt done the spring pics in at least 2 years...not sure why

My daughter's school used Strawbridge Studios out of Durham. I don't see how this is any more creepy than going to Sears Portrait Studio to have my kid's pictures taken there.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but you do realize this is illegal.
