I'm thinking of moving to Walltown (southern-most block, 1.5 blocks from East Campus) with my family (two young kids). Anyone else live around there? My only concern is that there are a lot of older rentals so the neighborhood seems to be transient especially since there are a lot of Bob Schmitz properties bunched together there. Obviously a lot of benefits to living there but just wanted to ask about the negatives. Thanks!

Had to use the Google to see where "Walltown" was.

With that area being in such close proximity to DT Durham and Duke; I imagine real estate would be a great investment there. Not sure what life would be like for a young family there. Durham has across the board become more "mainstream" friendly in the past few years. Mostly downtown and points southward though.

Hi, I used to live in Trinity Park and often walk around the East Campus so I'm familiar with the general area. I see families with young kids strolling all the time. Trinity Park has a mix of people long timers and new transplants (Duke faculty, Medical Center, etc.). Plenty of young kids, Halloween is really great, people from other areas come for the candies! I imagine it's not that different in Walltown. Yes, there are a lot of SFH rentals, renters are mostly Duke grad students and young scholars (postdoc, visiting scholars, etc.) so they tend to live 2-3 yrs and move on. I personally think it's a great area. What exactly is your concern?

Thanks for the thoughts. My concern is that of the 10 homes on the block we're looking at 8 are split family rentals and 1 is a house of undergrads (likely some frat). There is also an AirBnB rental very close. It just doesn't feel like a neighborhood - very transient and who know what you're going to get year-to-year. Maybe it's just that block? I've also read that people aren't big fans of Schmitz so maybe his properties aren't cared for and are deteriorating.
