We're looking to move to Durham in late June (cross fingers that our house sells!) and came up last weekend to look around a bit. It's likely that I'll be working at Duke and my husband will be working near Southpoint. We have a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old, so we're concerned about commute times and schools. (Small club, right? )

Two of the subdivisions that we're considering are Garrett Farms and Lochnora, because we've heard positive things about Forest View ES. Does anyone know how long it takes to drive from that area to Southpoint during typical commute times? We were only there on the weekend and didn't have a chance to try it out. Any other feedback about that area would be much appreciated, too!

We also drove around Solterra and really felt like it would be right for us, but the only house on the market is 3 br and $525K, which is not right for us.

I'm not sure about Duke since I've never driven there from that direction. However, I think the commute to Southpoint from Garrett Farms should be pretty easy - around 10 minutes. Just go south on Garrett Road and you'll be there in no time. The only hiccup might be Jordan High School. It's located along Garrett near the intersection at Hope Valley Road. The traffic can get pretty thick there at the beginning and end of the school day.

Mrs. Steel, can't you jog over from Garrett to Hope Valley Rd via Swarthmore Rd and you avoid Jordan High? It's a wee bit further (not too much??) but might save time. ??? But Mrs. Steel is correct, even with Jordan High the commute is not long at all.

We have friends who will be at Forestview this fall. Forestview's science program sounds amazing!

Not too sure about the commute to Southpoint, but I can tell you more about Forest View. We live about 1 mile from Garrett Farms (love the area btw) and my son is in third grade at FW and likes it very much. We moved here from New Mexico last August and have not regretted it. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't live anywhere else. We've been really happy here. Feel free to send me a PM if you'd like to know more about the school or the area.

Swathmore is a great cut through to avoid the congestion by Jordan, but it does go through a residential neighborhood. I'm surprised they haven't put in speed bumps yet...

You know, I'm not sure if there is speed bumps or not. I've only used it as a cut thru once and I don't remember if there was speed bumps. Seems like it's one of those roller coaster type streets (lots of ups and downs) and I usually drive slow on those anyway.

My guess is that it would take 15-20 minutes to commute from Garrett Farms to Southpoint. I do the reverse commute and it takes me only 15 minutes when I take Rt. 40 W to 15/501 to avoid the Jordan High traffic.
