Saw it on the menu at Glory Days sports bar near the Publix in Apex.

The Wandering Moose food truck has also started offering it. I had one last week and it was pretty good. I can't attest to how it stacks up against the real thing from Upstate NY but I wasn't disappointed. Even better than the ones I've had on Royal Caribbean.

I once flew myself from Boston to Buffalo just to make a quick stop at Charlie the Butcher for lunch before flying back home. I had no idea Glory Days was offering this but I'll stop there for lunch today and report back.

I honestly don't have real high hopes since I've tried other non-WNY versions and the "Kummelweck" is usually just a dry role with some salt on it... but hope springs eternal.

They used to offer this at BLINCOs, along with other regional favorites from other places. I was not a regular, but I do miss blincos.

Just got back from trying it out, and it was an acceptable Beef on Weck.

For the uninitiated a Kümmelweck roll is essentially a kaiser roll covered with caraway seeds and kosher salt. They need to be eaten soon after they are made because they get hard very rapidly. That's not a problem if you're one of the Buffalo institutions selling dozens if not hundreds of sandwiches every day, but they're very uncommon outside of Buffalo where it's hard to sell them while they are still fresh.

The roll at Glory Days seemed to be a pretty authentic which is better than some other places I've tried Weck where they just took a normal roll and dipped it in salt before serving it. They handled the "hard roll" problem by toasting it before serving it, a common method of softening up hard bread of any sort. While this isn't traditional, it worked for me and it was still able to soak up the meat juices. The roll tasted right. The roast beef was also fine and the sandwich was definitely recognizable as a Beef on Weck. I'll be back for another at some point.

The only part that was disappointing is that the horseradish wasn't plain ground horseradish, it was creamy horseradish sauce. The sandwich would be twice as good with plain horseradish.

So it was good. Not great, but better than almost every other attempt I've had outside WNY.

I can't remember where I was the only time I tried a Beef on Weck, but it seemed like a pretty meh sandwich to me.

I've never had a more over-rated food item in my life. The bread was too salty and the roast beef was bland, and the damn this was like $14! I can't remember the place but it was in a small town near Buffalo that's been serving it since like the 1880s. Anthony Bourdain had a beef on weck there, which is why I wanted to try it.
