The former Wake County Registrar of Deeds is charged with embezzling millions over the past six years.
Wake register of deeds Laura Riddick in court on embezzlement charges | News & Observer

So it took the County over SIX years to see that something was wrong. What kind of auditing system does the county have ? And who is to say this isn't happening in other county departments.

The solution is to do way the having elected Registers of Deeds in NC, and have ROD's hired by the County Manager, just like every other department head (except Sheriff, and that probably needs to be done as well).

Still baffles me that it took so long to catch this problem. There should be an audit yearly for this crap.

Anyone know what her salary was as Register of Deeds? I know the assistant was making roughly $79k in 2013 so I have to imagine hers dwarfed that.

Apparently I'm in the wrong line of work. Ridiculous.

This! Elected Registers of Deeds and County Sheriffs are not held to the same level of scrutiny as non-elected officials. The Sherrif literally has no oversight other than the County commissioners who hold the purse strings and can slash his/her budget, but that will ultimately hurt emergency response and would not be looked at favorably by the community.

And here's a bit or irony: Ms. Reddick protesting other Registrars for receiving perks while in office.

$143,267 when she retired this year, according to channel 11.

Interestingly enough, her editorial about perks was about 6 years ago . Maybe she was trying to prove her point and show just how incompetent/ineffective government could be? So she decided to embezzle money to highlight the problem? Surprised & saddened that it took 6 years for them to catch her?!

What would really be funny is if she used part of the 900k to post her 700k bail. Maybe she hasn't touched any of it and was just waiting to see how long it would take for someone to come knocking.

Not to burst anyone's bubble but...she has been charged. Not convicted. What happened to "Innocent until proven guilty"?

If that was her plan (and I'd say there's no way it was) it failed miserably when actual charges were filed.
