Pretty heavy usage during rush hours. I don't think "going over" gives a fair snapshot of how heavily it's used.
Agreed.
Makes me laugh when people say barely anyone uses it. Drive on that thing during rush hours and you'll see it's fairly heavily used. Peak use is during commuter times and I agree it'll definitely pick up more once it's been completed back to I-40 on the other end.
People will always complain, but my time is worth the couple dollars to use the road.
I agree. I use the South Salem st. toll twice daily. For $.50 I save at least 15 minutes of travel time a day. I probably break even with the cost since I don't sit at 3 lights and have to rev and brake for those lights as well. Sometimes you can sit a couple of light cycles to get from 55 onto US-1 in the morning.
For me, it's worth $2.00 a week (4 days a week) to save at least an hour and probably get my $$ back in fuel savings anyway.
Hopefully they will leave it tolled even after it's been paid off. If they ever make it free, the area would blow up even more than now with a free freeway option.

"Free freeway"... Like they have up north - North Raleigh that is
Also give them time to complete the last leg(s) of 540. Once it connects all the way to 64 or heck, even 401, I bet we'll see a significant increase in usage
I can't say for sure but it looks like the DOT is aiming to start construction on the 2 sections needed to connect NC55 Bypass to I-40 in the next year or two. That should keep folks in S.Wake county from hitting the beltline every time they want to head East.

And you too would have had a "free freeway" if you had just been willing to wait for it, like North Raleigh waited 30 years for 540 and the south side of Charlotte waited 30 years for 485. But you wouldn't wait, so your legislators cut a deal to get a freeway built 15 years sooner than it would have been. It came with a price tag, though. And besides, you got a free four-laned NC 55 in the process. No sympathy from North Raleigh.
