I couldn't not share the headline with my CD friends Happy holidays (in all seriousness, happy holidays to my CD friends...sorry for any business to suffer a loss, especially this time of year)! https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle...00-stores.html
They, and all the other mattress stores, have had a good run. Once that "memory foam" concept was incorporated it seems like the mattresses did not last very long, so there was a lot of turnover and a lot of money to be made. Every one jumped in, and the competition became fierce. Now the smart ones are pulling out with a pocket full of dollars still in their trousers.
Got my new bed at the Original Mattress Factory in Durham on a friend's recommendation, and I have no complaints to register about it. I honestly have no idea how the three Mattress Firm stores within a mile of each other on Fayetteville Road in Durham--two of which face each other on the street!--have been able to stay in business so long when they seem to be competing with each other more than any other businesses around them.
What I heard was that Mattress Firm was bought out by an overseas buyer.
Perhaps the giant number of stores was a plan to make an attractive buyer think they were obtaining a major position in the US mattress market.
When the buyer learned what was really going on, they started trying to straighten out the mess they inherited.
