One of the colleges that I went to was in the very Northern part o f NY. Saw rapids freeze over the course of a couple of weeks (they freeze from the bottom up). -30 was not an uncommon morning temperature for the first few weeks of Jan. So cold up there that winters in Rochester felt mild in comparison.

One of the things that I felt this winter was a very strong draft coming in from the vents below my fireplace. Found a black magnetic strip made purposely to seal up that vent and have been noticeably warmer in that room since. My big winter 'score' this year.

Really?? I can think of many recently that were lots colder. That December ice storm in 2002 was wretched. Knocked out power for 5 days at my house. I had a toddler at the time. That was freaking frigid. We had to go to a hotel and leave the poor dogs at the house.

Anyone else get that email from Duke to cut down on electricity usage through 10am this morning?

We probably would have if we hadn't had an 18 month old and my dad in the hospital at Duke and my mom already in a warm hotel room at Duke.

The City Page for Raleigh (since you didn't specify exactly where you meant) has a climate graph and shows that "typical" January weather is a low of 30, high of 50. Yes, this has been a LOT colder! But so has everywhere.

I grew up here, and the coldest winter we have had in my lifetime was '85, where we hit negative temps (-9 on 1/21/85 is the record-breaker in recorded history).

1977 was the other really cold winter I remember, with lakes freezing over enough to skate on (for Northerners, since Southerners didn't own ice skates back then, long before hockey came to the area)

I understand ponds froze over in 1970, as well, but I must have been too young to remember.

So, this is probably among the 4 coldest winters (so far) in the past 50 years--but then we've had those days in the 60s, too. We're only halfway through, so let's see how it falls out at the end of the month.

EDIT: Here a cool day-by-day chart of 30-year average high/low temps. Looks like the "traditionally coldest" days were Jan 7-11 and we are on the 'upswing'!

And finally, a day-by-day of record temps and precip.

Yes. It's colder. The weather guru's keep saying that it's going to change and get warmer starting the end of the month. I'm not sure that I believe it.

Well, he did say in the 13 years that he's lived here. He wasn't here in 2002. Funnily enough, we were down visiting Greensboro during the 2002 storm. I guess we didn't realize how bad it was and drove down from DC for my husband's company Christmas party. What a nightmare with all of that ice! Luckily my mother-in-law had power. So we gave up our hotel room in Burlington so that someone else could stay there as they were sold out with all of the power outages. We were happy to get back to DC!

It's supposed to be pretty warm next week except for Weds.

48 tomorrow (that would be almost 50, y'all)
32 Weds
45 Thurs
52 Fri
57 Sat
63 Sun
63 Mon
56 Tues
57 Weds

At least that's Wunderground's forecast for Chapel Hill. Maybe it will be drastically cold over there in Raleighwood.

The ice storm came in early December with a few very cold days. The rest of the winter was mild the best I remember.
