I am reading plenty of articles today about the snowfall strictly for today, and how it compares to snowfall for specific days in the past. What I am having trouble finding is the record for the most snowfall in a given year for Raleigh, NC. Anyone know where I can find the list of top yearly snowfalls, for the city of Raleigh?

January 2000 when we had over 20 inches in one snowfall (and also a decent 3+ inch storm a week or so before that) would have to rank up there with these no?

Typically records are kept by season rather than calendar year. Here's a table that hasn't been updated for the past ~5 years and has some missing data in there, but shows the record snowfall being 1999-2000 with 25.8 inches, all in January.

Monthly Total Snowfall, RALEIGH DURHAM WSFO AP, NORTH CAROLINA

As several others have noted that consisted primarily of the massive 20-inch storm late in the month, preceded by a 3-inch one a week earlier and a bit more sprinkled in during the month.

If you really want the actual calendar year, that table points to 2000, with the 25.8 inches in January plus another 2.2 inches in November and 0.1 inches in December for a total of a little over 28 inches.

I remember that one. Weather reporters predicted flurries and over 20 inches popped up.

While they did miss the forecast amount, I’ll grant you that. They were far from predicting “flurries” leading up to it and they did revise their predictions upward as data and model runs came in.

I remember that one because we were supposed to have a bunch of fundraising events in HS for a concert those couple of weeks. Needless to say we weren't able to do them because of the snow and the concert did not happen.

Wednesday's snow reminded me a little bit of that one, in the way we first got a small amount forecast and then it just kept snowing and snowing...although in 2000, it just didn't stop all day and night. It was fun for a day or tow, then not fun to be stuck in the house for almost two weeks (2 miles uphill to get out, outside the city limits so last on the list for plowing). I do have some pics of us walking on the yet-unpaved 540 in 20 inches of snow somewhere.

Re: That last link

Coincidental, but around three or four days after Greg Fishel posted that, we had a good 6-7 inch snowstorm come through
